PUTRAJAYA, May 31 (Bernama) -- In a bid to produce more academicians in Islamic economics and banking, Malaysia needs to discuss possibilities of cooperation with Egypt and Saudi Arabia to set up more education faculties in these fields in the country, said Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Seri Jamil Khir Baharom.
He said that he had asked Baitulmal Professional Institute (IPB) chairman Datuk Wan Mohamad Sheikh Abdul Aziz to follow up on the matter so that students in Malaysia no longer need to be sent to the two countries to study these subjects.
"We want our country to always have leaders, academicians or those who can answer questions on syariah, muamalat (financial transactions) and Islamic economics and banking, So we are seriously planning this programme," he told reporters after opening the 7th Conference of Syariah Advisers of Malaysian Islamic Financial Institutions, at the Putrajaya International Convention Centre, here Tuesday.
Jamil Khir said the government had also carried out various efforts for this purpose, which included the Federal Territory Islamic Religious Council (MAIWP) and Amanah Raya Berhad sponsoring 63 students to pursue Islamic finance in Egypt.
Besides this, he said a Tahfiz Wal Muamalat Faculty was set up at the Islamic Development Department's (Jakim) Darul Quran which not only emphasised on memorisation of the Quran but also muamalat.
A total of 200 participants comprising ulama (religious scholars) , syariah advisers, industry representatives, academicians, negotiators and researchers took part in the day-long conference.
